Giant Cell Arteritis of the Ophthalmic Artery - Medical Illustration, Human Anatomy Drawing
This medical exhibit begins with one overall lateral view of the head and neck revealing the brain, eye and major arteries. This image clearly shows the pathway of blood flow up through the carotid and through the ophthalmic artery to the eye. A box is drawn around the region of the eye and orbit highlighting the region of interest in this case. Also, an enlarged view of this orbital region illustrates the vasculature of the eye in greater detail. This enlargement reveals the nodular thickenings of the ophthalmic artery showing that the arteritis in this case was not a continuous lesion. The optic nerve is also be shown in this image. Next, two cross sectional views of the ophthalmic artery compare normal anatomy with the arteritis in this case. The normal image shows a nice round open lumen surrounded by a thin intima and a thicker muscular layer. The abnormal image shows severe hypertrophy of the intimal and muscular layers leading to severe narrowing of the lumen. Finally, two side cut-away views of a section of the ophthalmic artery compares normal anatomy and arteritis. The normal image have arrows showing normal unobstructed blood flow. The second image shows a nodular area of thickening a stenosis with the arrows representing a severe restriction of blood flow.
